You can configure colors, fonts, spacing, and shapes within your TimeStory documents. This can be used to make more attractive documents for sharing or presenting, or just to help you visually navigate your own personal documents.
Adjust the style of your document using fields in the Inspector. These fields adapt as you select events, sections, and the document itself, to present appropriate options.
To set the overall document background, use the Document Inspector (choose Inspector with no events or sections selected). Under “Document Style”, you can configure the background color as well as optional gridlines.
If you use sections, you can also select a specific section, and within its Inspector, choose a “Background” under “Section Contents Style”. This overrides the document background for this section; choose “None” (the default) to allow the document background to show.
Your timeline includes titles for sections and events. You can use the Inspector to set fonts and colors while events or sections are selected; you can also use the Style > Text menu, which provides a fuller range of standard text styling options.
Note that you can also select specific ranges of text within a title and apply text styles and fonts—you don’t always need to set the entire title at once.
The date header across the top of your document can also be styled; use the Document Inspector (make sure no events or sections are selected, and choose the Inspector), and look for the Date Labels section.
When you save a TimeStory document, it preserves all your text-styling choices; note, however, that if you send this document to someone whose Mac doesn’t have the same fonts, they may see alternate fonts substituted for the ones they don’t have.
The various text-color settings all allow a special “Automatic” setting. This includes:
When you set a text color to Automatic, TimeStory will automatically show it as either black or white, depending on its background color. For example, if you mark an event title’s color as Automatic, TimeStory will determine its background to be:
(Automatic text color was introduced in version 1.6; if you have documents created prior to that release, and want to use automatic text colors, load those documents in version 1.6 or newer, select all events and each section heading, and change their text colors to Automatic.)
To copy styling from one event to another, or from one section to another, use the Copy Style and Paste Style menu options. These are visible on the main menu (under Style), as well as on the context menu.
Events are normally shown along with their titles in the timeline. Using the Inspector, you can adjust whether they are shown and where.
Regardless of the above setting, TimeStory will cut off any title that it doesn’t have room to draw, but will always show the complete title if you double-click to edit the event, or if you “hover” the mouse over the cut-off title.
Your document (or each section of your document) is divided into rows of equal height. Use the Document Inspector to adjust the Row Height and Row Spacing globally.
A span event’s height always equals the document’s Row Height. Point events, however, use a separate height value, configured as “Point Height” on the Document Inspector.
Each event’s title text will be sized according to its font and font size. You can stick with the same font everywhere, or set the font per event. These font settings, combined with the row height, determine how many lines of text can be shown per event.
To visualize and edit the row and text settings together, use the Inspector, or select one or more events and choose Style > Event Title Vertical Layout; this brings up a small window which collects the key settings in one place.
If you have a document styled just the way you like it, and want to apply that same style to other documents, use Style > Export Document Theme to File. This will save a theme file, which can be applied to any other document using Style > Import Document Theme from File.
